# Spark plug wrench size

The wrench size is the one spec people assume is "obvious" — and the one that quietly ruins more spark plugs than any other. It is simply the **hex**, the six-sided nut moulded into the metal body, that your socket grips. Get it slightly wrong and you round it off; get the right size with the wrong socket and you crush the plug. Here is how to never do either.

## What the wrench size actually is

Look at the metal shell of any spark plug, just above the threads. You'll see a **hexagonal nut** — that's the hex. The "wrench size" or "hex size" is the distance across its flats, exactly like a bolt head. Your **spark-plug socket** slips over that hex, and the size of the socket must match it precisely.

It has nothing to do with the thread, the reach or the heat range. Two plugs can be mechanically identical in the cylinder head and still need **two different sockets** on the bench. That is the part most people miss.

## The common sizes

Spark-plug hexes cluster around a handful of standard sizes. The awkward part is that some come from **metric** design and some from **inch** design, so the same physical hex can be labelled two different ways.

Notice the trap: **16 mm** and **5/8"** are close enough to share a socket; **20.8 mm** and **13/16"** are literally the same hex with two names. But **16 mm** and **21 mm** are *not* interchangeable — and forcing a 21 mm socket onto a 16 mm hex is exactly how a plug gets rounded.

## Always use a proper spark-plug socket

A spark-plug socket is not just "a socket of the right size". It is purpose-built:

- **A rubber or magnetic insert** inside retains the plug, so it doesn't drop into the engine bay (or down a deep well) when you pull it out;
- **A thin wall**, so it slides down the narrow, deeply recessed plug wells of modern engines where an ordinary socket simply won't fit;
- **A deep body**, long enough to clear the full height of the plug and its terminal.

Good to know

On modern recessed plugs a **thin-wall socket is essential** — a standard socket is too fat to reach the hex. And the socket itself must be in good shape: a worn or slightly-off socket **rounds the hex** and ruins the plug, sometimes seizing it in the head. Prefer a **6-point socket over a 12-point** — six points grip the flats squarely, while twelve points bite the corners and are far more likely to round them.

## Torque matters as much as size

The right socket gets the plug out and in; the right **torque** keeps it sealed without destroying it. Tighten to the manufacturer's spec — typically a modest figure for the gasket type — and stop. **Don't over-crush it.** Over-tightening flattens the sealing washer past its limit, distorts the shell, can crack the insulator and makes the next removal a nightmare. Under-tightening leaves a poor heat path and a gas leak. A torque wrench is the cheap insurance here.

## The classic mistake

The most common error is grabbing the **nearest socket that "feels close enough"**. Concrete example: a plug with a **16 mm** hex, attacked with a **5/8"** deep socket from a general set — it nips on, the user leans into it, and because 5/8" (15.9 mm) is a hair small it bites the corners and shaves the hex round. Now the correct 16 mm socket spins freely and the plug is stuck in an aluminium head. The reverse — a US plug listed at **13/16"** met with a **21 mm** socket — leaves slop, rounds the corners just the same, and on a recessed plug you can't even see it happening until it's too late.
